Scale practice is a fundamental part of cello playing, essential for everyone from absolute beginners and hobbyists to students and professional performers.
Regardless of skill level, mastering scales is a core technique that should be cultivated continuously.
Drawing from years of performing and teaching experience, I have compiled the essential scale exercises into two volumes, organized by level of difficulty.Â
Basic Volume
Designed for students learning 4th position and beyond, this book focuses on two-octave scales.
It includes foundational scale exercises, basic bowing techniques, left-hand touch, and shifting practice.
Advanced Volume
Intended for students starting sonatas or concertos and more advanced players, this book covers three-octave scales, with extended exercises up to four octaves.
It features essential scale patterns, high-position preparation, and advanced bowing techniques such as spiccato and sautillé.
Cello Basic Technique – Starter & Position Volumes
Publication Date: November 1, 2024 | Publisher: YesolÂ
Although the initial draft of this book was completed over ten years ago, I took time to revise it thoroughly in order to include the most effective exercises I’ve discovered and tested through years of teaching experience—especially since it is a beginner’s method book.
To keep practice engaging, I’ve included simple original melodies tailored to each technical topic, and I aimed to present key concepts as clearly and concisely as possible on every page.Â
Starter Volume
A scale book for absolute beginners, featuring open-string bowing, basic first-position fingering, slurs, staccato, fundamental rhythms, and introductory scale patterns.
Position Volume
Designed for students who have completed the Starter Volume or are familiar with first position. Covers extended hand shapes in half and first positions, basic fingering in second to fourth positions, shifting exercises, and two-octave scales.
